I chose a clip from the movie "Mr. Holland's Opus" as an example of good teaching. In this clip, you can see that the band teacher, Mr. Holland, really cares for his students, and isn't just looking for perfection. As a student who is struggling, being told that they aren't trying hard enough or that they are stupid is never going to motivate or encourage them to do better. Instead, Mr. Holland chooses to take that struggling student and work with her individually so she doesn't feel as humiliated if she messes up. Then, when she does mess up, instead of scolding her he encourages her to keep going and gives her helpful suggestions to do better. Having an encouraging teacher who wants you to succeed is crucial for some students to improve. If someone else believes in them, they can begin to believe in themselves.
For my example of bad teaching, I have chosen this clip from the second Harry Potter film. In this scene, the students are introduced to their new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Gildeory Lockhart. Right off the bat he presents himself as very self-centered, demonstrated through his stance and the portraits of himself all over the classroom. This immediately sets up a "teacher knows everything" atmosphere, which can hinder his students performances. He tries to win the students respect by telling them about his many accomplishments, and ensuring them that no matter what happens in the classroom, they will always be protected because he is there. This is immediately contradicted during his first exercise, which you cans see in the video. He sets a bundle of mischievous pixies loose in the room and expects the students to deal with them and know how to get them back in their cage, even though he has given them no instruction to help them with that. To make matters worse, he set up the exercise by telling the students that they should fear what was inside the cage, and asked them "not to scream" once he removed the cover. Then, as soon as the pixies were released, he told them to snatch them up, and that it should be easy because they're "only pixies". This completely contradicted what he first explained, and was a very poor introduction to the class. He then, seeing that the students could not capture them, attempted to do so himself and failed. This showed that he was inexperienced and couldn't even complete the task he demeaned his students for not being able to achieve. He then ran back into his office, heaving the mess for the children to deal with. Everything Professor Lockhart demonstrates in this video is a very poor approach to teaching, and leaves the students feeling unsuccessful and not having learned anything.
